Child Support

Child Support

Jennifer Compton Honorable Mention - Poetry, 2019 Art & Literary Contest

All the kids laugh At my clothes and shoes A crime of fashion They won’t excuse

Hand-me-downs From my brother Good enough Says my mother

A hole in my jeans Shirt with a stain Playground taunting Education in pain

Mama’s been working Haven’t seen her for days The freezer stands empty But for plastic ice trays

Daddy’s been gone More than a year Came by to visit Not even a tear

Resentment fills me Conversation is short Do you think you could pay your child support
